Breitner keyed up for East Bengal-Bayern Munich clash

Kolkata, Nov 16 (IANS) Nostalgia is certain to brim over as East Bengal All Star team, made up of players who donned the club jerseys between the 1970s and the early 1990s, take on FC Bayern Munich All Star team of former World Cuppers in an exhibition match here Wednesday.

The game is being played at the Yuva Bharati Krirangan for a good cause -- the proceeds are to be used for providing education, better health and hygiene facilities and for the economic independence of street children.

Legendary German player Paul Breitner, who holds the rare distinction of having scored in two different World Cup finals (1974, 1982), said: 'We are a side who are not expected to lose any game. We are glad to give something back to football which has taught and given us something over the years.'

The 22-member FC Bayern side, including ex-World Cuppers like Breitner, Andreas Brehme and Stefan Reuters, arrived here Monday night.

'We hope to do something special through the match by being part in such a noble cause,' said Breitner.

To a query, Breitner said, 'Germany can help Indian football by sending German coaches to train Indians and also sending teams to play against the Indian sides over the coming years.'

Brehme said he was looking forward to a wonderful and competitive game against East Bengal All Stars.

'We are now looking forward to the game against the Bengal giants. I am hoping for a wonderful and competitive game as we are also taking this match seriously and out to prove that we still can play football at this age'.

Asked to rate Argentinian Diego Maradona as a coach, Brehme said: 'I have played against Maradonna a few times and he was incredible as a player. It is difficult for me to judge him as a coach.'

The winner of the exhibition tie will be given the J.C. Guha Centenary Trophy.

The match has been organised by NGOS like Towards Life Foundation and Nabadisha, who have been working among street children for years.

The East Bengal All Stars will be led by former international defender Sudhir Karmakar, with celebrated midfielder of the 1970s Goutam Sarkar as his deputy in the floodlight game.
